Meeting with the Director of the Criminal Police of the Regional Police Directorate in Košice on police education

On 15.08.2023 and 02.10.2023 Fenestra representatives met with the Director of the Criminal Police of the Regional Police Headquarters in Košice. The aim of the meetings was to discuss the need and possibilities of training of police officers in the Košice region.

At the meeting, we talked about who from the Police Department should attend the training, how the groups would be divided by position and district, the scope and content of the training, and also which organization would provide the training in each district. We also discussed the capacity of the organisations as well as what length of training is acceptable to the police.

We talked about barriers in practice, information on the issue of violence against women and victims of domestic violence that would be useful for officers and members of the Police Force, and we also shared what our experiences have been based on information directly from women experiencing violence and victims of domestic violence about their experiences with the police.

We have tentatively agreed that the training could take place during one week in early November.

We agreed that the groups would be divided by districts:

-Košice, Košice-okolie

-Rožňava

-Michalovce, Trebišov

-Spišská Nová Ves, Gelnica

In each district, they receive training:

-Officers of the permanent services of the District Police Departments

-Officers of the summary inquiry

-Investigators

Education will be provided by:

-Fenestra in Košice, Košice-okolie, Rožňava districts

-Pomoc rodine in Michalovce, Trebišov districts

-Hana in Spišská Nová Ves, Gelnica districts

We talked about what should be the content of the training for each group. We agreed that the content for all groups would be how to identify that it is violence, how to assess risks, how to communicate with the victim. At the same time, the training will include an exchange of experiences related to the institution of expulsion for the officers of the permanent services of the District Police Departments. Secondary victimisation training will be part of the training for investigation officers and investigators.

At the same time, we agreed at the meeting that the police will ensure the organizational aspect of the training (place, equipment, responsible persons in the individual districts, as well as the participation of policemen and policewomen).

The project „We stand with women. We protect and support them!“ benefits from a 486 622 € grant from Norway through the Norway Grants. The project has been co-financed from the State Budget of the Slovak Republic in the amount of 72 993 €.

The aim of the project is to increase availability of specialist counselling centres for women – survivors of intimate partner violence and their children in Kosice region by enhancing and increasing the quality of support services in the existing counselling centres in Košice, Michalovce and Spišská Nová Ves and establishing new counselling centres in Rožňava, Gelnica and Sobrance. At the same time, our aim is to make information about the counselling centres and help and support they provide more available to women in Košice region and to improve the response of institutions where women and children seek protection from violence

The project is implemented by Fenestra in partnership with OZHANA and OZ Pomoc rodine.
